This new DOE report compares Incandescent, Compact Fluorescent, and LED lamps for total lifecycle energy consumption. The report finds that CFL and LED currently use about quarter of the energy of incandescent lamps over their life and if LEDs continue to improve as predicted, by 2015 LEDs will use half of CFL energy over full lifecycle.
