The NSW Government, Department of the Environment and Heritage has released an Energy Efficient Lighting Technology Report (PDF). The report gives a good overview of current lighting technologies and their respective efficacies. This is a useful guide in cutting through much of the hype around new technologies including LED lighting, and providing a reasonable base for decision making on which technology to use when.

This new DOE report compares Incandescent, Compact Fluorescent, and LED lamps for total lifecycle energy consumption. The report finds that CFL and LED currently use about quarter of the energy of incandescent lamps over their life and if LEDs continue to improve as predicted, by 2015 LEDs will use half of CFL energy over full lifecycle.
